Conversation history

I keep a local text log for one WhatsApp chat and include recent exchanges when asking a conversation agent for a reply.

Some agents already retain context when a later call reuses the returned conversation_id. See conversation processing. Use a separate conversation ID for each client/chat pair. File history is an optional alternative when I want explicit storage and retention. It is not provided by the WhatsApp integration.

Prepare the history file

This example needs the Home Assistant File and Shell Command integrations and a configured generative conversation agent.

  1. Create the directory /config/whatsapp_history and an empty file named example_chat.txt inside it.
  2. Merge the following settings into configuration.yaml. Keep existing entries beneath homeassistant: and shell_command:.
  3. Check the configuration and restart Home Assistant to load the shell commands.
  4. Add the File integration through Settings > Devices & services. Choose its notification option and the path /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.txt. Leave timestamps disabled. Rename the resulting notify entity to notify.whatsapp_example_history, or replace that entity ID in the automation below.
homeassistant:
  allowlist_external_dirs:
    - /config/whatsapp_history

shell_command:
  whatsapp_history_read: >-
    tail -n 20 /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.txt
  whatsapp_history_trim: >-
    tail -n 20 /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.txt
    > /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.tmp
    && mv /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.tmp
    /config/whatsapp_history/example_chat.txt

These paths belong to Home Assistant Core. They are not media paths inside the WhatsApp add-on. Keep filenames fixed in these commands; pass message text to the File notification action, never into a shell command.

Reply using recent exchanges

Replace the synthetic group JID and agent entity below. This is a complete automation for one shared group conversation. Use it instead of another agent-reply automation for that group to avoid duplicate replies.

          error: true
  mode: queued
  max: 10

Each stored line contains one user/assistant exchange. JSON encoding escapes newlines inside messages, so tail -n 20 retains 20 exchanges instead of an unpredictable number of multiline messages. This limits the number of turns, not their token count. Reduce it for agents with smaller context limits.

The queued mode keeps this automation's read, reply, append, and trim steps in order. Give any additional chat its own file, notify entity, shell commands, and filtered automation. Do not run another writer against the same file. For independent private conversations within a group, storage must also be separated by participant; this example intentionally shares the group history.

The log records only exchanges handled by this automation after an accepted send. It does not import WhatsApp history or record every outgoing message. The agent call omits conversation_id because the file supplies the context. Choose the agent's permitted tools for the people in this chat. File contents and automation traces contain private conversation data.
